A māraka daśā inside the yoga-khaṇḍa is a candidate, not a death date (44.20–21).
Āyurdāya is the hardest classical topic. BPHS 43.2 says it is difficult even for the gods. First the three gaṇita methods (Piṇḍāyu, Naisargikāyu, Aṃśāyu) are computed and one is chosen from the strength of the Sun, the Moon, and the lagneśa. That number is not the nirṇaya. BPHS 44.5: know alpa / madhya / pūrṇa from the yogas first, then think of māraka. vastavik uses the three-pair yoga (43.33–40) as the khaṇḍa. Saturn/Jupiter kakṣyā (43.47–50) only rewrites the 43.41–46 backup span; it does not override a pair-majority when gaṇita already sits in that 44.11 window. Otherwise the yoga-span prevails. Māraka daśās are listed only inside the decided window — never as a death date. Chapter numbers follow the common Santhanam-style BPHS (ch. 43–44); some prints number Āyurdāya as 45. Phaladeepika editions number the same adhyāya 16 or 22.

In deep exaltation the year-piṇḍas from the Sun are 19, 25, 15, 12, 15, 21, and 20. In deep debilitation these are halved; in between, use the rule of three.

Except Venus and Saturn, halve a combust graha. Reduce one third in an enemy sign, except in retrogression (vakra-cāra). Mars is also read as vakra in later paddhati.

Aṃśāyu: multiply the longitude by 108; expunge twelves. The remainder in rāśi-degree is years-months. Same haraṇas as Piṇḍāyu except Krūrodaya. Bharana: ×3 in exaltation or own sign; ×2 in own navāṃśa, own drekkāṇa, or vargottama. If both ×3 and ×2 apply, use only ×3. If both ½ and ⅓ apply, use only ½.

Three pairs: (1) lagneśa and 8th-lord, (2) Saturn and Moon, (3) natal Lagna and Horā-lagna. Both movable, or fixed+dual → dīrgha. Both dual, or movable+fixed → madhya. Both fixed, or movable+dual → alpa. Two or three agreeing pairs decide. If all three differ, Lagna–Horā-lagna wins; but if the Moon is in Lagna or the 7th, Saturn–Moon wins.

The 3rd and the 8th are the two houses of life. The 12th from each — the 2nd and the 7th — are māraka.

Of the two, the 2nd is the stronger killer. Mārakas are the 2nd/7th lords, malefics in those houses, and malefics joined to those lords.
